3. Invidia (Envy)

Next, in the Dance, followed Envy,
Filled full of feud and felony, Hid malice and despite;
For privy (secret) hatred that traitor trembled.

(The Seven Deadly Sins, William Dunbar, 15th C)

Envy is that which makes us blush for shame, with grief beholding others’ happiness. (English poem)

Mankind, of one thing have I wonder,

Thou takest not in time to mend;

When body and soul are parted in sunder

No worldly good shall with thee wend,

When thou art dead and in the earth lie under.

(Castle of Preserverance 1425- morality play)
