7. Acedia (Sloth)

Then Sloth that at the second bidding came like a sow out of a dungheap, full sleepy was his pace, many a lazy stupid glutton

(The Deadly Sins William Dunbar, 15th C.)

Sloth looks with hate on every action meet,
And to ill-doing ever turns the will, Is slow to work, and quick to make retreat.

(English poem)

‘The world has given him of its treasures to the full,
the sin seven have ministered to his fleshly pleasures and vices,
But there is no satisfaction in his soul’.

(Castle of Perseverance 1425- morality play)
